HEAL Organises Snake Awareness Workshop at Flora Fountain, Tangra

27 October 2024

On 27th October 2024, HEAL organized a much-needed Snake Awareness and Snakebite Mitigation Workshop at Flora Fountain, Tangra, where residents had been living in fear due to frequent snake sightings near the community’s ponds. With panic spreading and misconceptions growing, we stepped in to reduce this fear and help the community coexist with these essential reptiles.

Led by our expert team members Suvrajyoti Chatterjee and Aditya Pardhan , the workshop began by addressing the root of the panic—introducing the residents to the common species of snakes in the area, both venomous and non-venomous, and explaining their ecological role. More importantly, we focused on practical, methods to avoid unnecessary snake encounters and shared step-by-step guidance on what to do if a snakebite occurs, breaking down myths and harmful practices that put lives at risk.

We are grateful to our HEAL member Batul Pipewala Batul P for her key role in organizing the event and ensuring its success, as well as to Sohini Das, Secretary of Flora Fountain, for her support and for welcoming this initiative into the community.

It brings us great satisfaction to see urban communities open to learning how to coexist with snakes. We are always eager to offer our support, knowing that fostering understanding and promoting peaceful coexistence is the key to protecting both wildlife and people.
