Chilika Red Rice

This artwork links human health to nature conservation and is a boutique piece created by artist Sudarshan Shaw. He adopts the heritage art style of Patachitra to convey the importance of preservation of life.

Like the lively green that is born on the colour tray when the primal yellow and blue are mixed, the sacred confluence of warmth and water nurtures the vibrant, verdant life.

Life, in the wetlands of Chilika, is one single thread that runs through and turns to take different forms on the canvas of this confluence – fish, wild wetland mammals, an indigenous farmer or an indigenous rice crop.

This artwork is a tribute to the thriving grandeur that Chilika’s red rice is made of.

Red rice or rice with a red bran layer was revered in ancient Indian texts. Susruta (c. 400 BC), Charaka (c. 700 BC), and Vagbhata (c. 700 AD), the well-known vriddha trayi (Trio of Elders) of Ayurveda, highly valued its power to redress the imbalance in three biological humors or doshas – the vata, the pitta, and the kapha. Modern research has established that red rice is a nutrient powerhouse. It contains essential minerals, dietary fibre, antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties that enhance overall health and helps in weight management. It makes a stellar choice for those seeking a balanced and wholesome diet. It has a low glycemic index and is beneficial for diabetic patients.

Each pack of Chilika red rice is sourced from naturally farmed rice lands along the banks of Chilika – the largest brackishwater lagoon in Asia. These rice lands are ecosystems in themselves as they provide seasonal refuge to the rare and elusive Fishing Cat – a globally endangered wetland predator. Moreover, they are traditionally harvested and supports local livelihoods. By buying this pack, you will help under-represented farmer communities and encourage them to continue this health food.
