Farming for the Future of Wetlands and Wildlife
Chilika: A Wetland of Global Significance
Located on India’s eastern coast, Chilika Lake is the country’s largest brackish water lagoon and a UNESCO-designated Ramsar site, recognized for its global ecological importance. Stretching over 1,100 sq km, this lagoon is home to:
- 200+ species of fish
- Thousands of migratory birds
- India’s only population of lagoon-dwelling Irrawaddy dolphins
It is one of South Asia’s last remaining coastal wetland systems—a cradle of biodiversity, culture, and climate resilience.
Farming That Keeps Wetlands Alive
For generations, local farming communities around Chilika have acted as custodians of the wetland, cultivating indigenous red rice using traditional, chemical-free methods.
- Chemical-free and adapted to the wetland’s flood cycles
- Maintains soil and water health
- Supports marginalized families with food security and livelihoods
This centuries-old farming system is a rare example of wise-use wetland agriculture—a practice that allows people and nature to thrive together.
A New Threat: Aquaculture Expansion
With market demand for white rice growing, Chilika Red Rice has seen a sharp decline in local sales. Many farmers are abandoning their fields—or worse, selling them to aquaculture firms, especially shrimp farming.
This shift brings with it:
- Loss of biodiversity through clearing of native wetland vegetation
- Pollution of water through chemical effluents and artificial feed
- Disruption of natural water flows, affecting fish, birds, and mammals
What was once a vibrant wetland is slowly turning into barren pools of pollution.
Saving Chilika
How Red Rice Cultivation Protects a Fragile Wetland
Fishing Cat: A Wetland Guardian Under Threat
Among Chilika’s most charismatic species is the Fishing Cat (Prionailurus viverrinus)—a rare, semi-aquatic wild cat completely dependent on wetland ecosystems.
- Fewer than 10,000 individuals remain worldwide
- Listed as Vulnerable by the IUCN
- Chilika supports one of the world’s largest known populations—with ~176 individuals living in the marshlands around the lake
But as aquaculture spreads and red rice paddies vanish, Fishing Cats lose both shelter and prey. Without swift action, we risk losing this iconic species—a symbol of Chilika’s wild integrity.
Our Model: Conservation Through Cultivation
We believe that conservation must benefit communities to succeed. That’s why we’ve built a model that connects red rice cultivation with wildlife protection.
By making this nutritious, heritage rice accessible to urban markets, we ensure that:
- Farmers are paid fair prices and encouraged to continue cultivating red rice
- Wetland habitats are protected from aquaculture expansion
- Endangered species like the Fishing Cat have a future in the wild
This deep interdependence between land, livelihood, and life is what inspires our logo—where the Fishing Cat and the grain of red rice come together as a symbol of coexistence and shared survival.
What One Pack of Red Rice Can Do
When you choose Chilika Red Rice, you’re not just buying a healthier grain. You’re taking part in a movement that:
Preserves Wetland Health
Red rice farming maintains the lagoon’s ecology, unlike aquaculture which alters the chemical and physical properties of wetlands.
Supports Traditional Farmers
Sustaining red rice cultivation ensures that farmers continue stewarding the land, preventing its sale to commercial aquaculture.
Provides Fishing Cat Habitat
The wetlands and paddy fields act as buffer zones, offering space for Fishing Cats to hunt and shelter.
Prevents Pollution & Overextraction
Chemical-free rice farming reduces toxic runoff, keeping Chilika’s waters clean and safe for wildlife.
Your Choice Matters
By choosing Chilika Red Rice, you’re actively helping to:
- Stop the spread of unsustainable aquaculture

Frequently Asked Questions
What is red rice?
Red rice is a naturally pigmented variety of rice that gets its rich red color from anthocyanins—powerful antioxidants—that are found in its bran layers. Unlike polished white rice, it retains these bran layers, making it more nutritious, high in fiber, and full of earthy flavor.
Shipping Cost?
Each purchase has a flat shipping charge of rs 100.
Why is red rice grown in wetlands?
This variety of red rice is an indigenous strain called Bankia, adapted to grow in flood-prone areas by drawing nutrients from the silt deposited by floodwaters. Communities living around these areas have traditionally cultivated this rice, which is ideally suited to naturally flooded landscapes. Bankia has unique adaptations that allow it to grow with the rising floodwaters—reaching heights of over six feet, for instance. This enables it to thrive amid the dynamic transformations of wetlands during the monsoon, while its salt tolerance allows it to survive in brackish water, such as that of Chilika. As a result, red rice is grown in wetlands like Chilika, where commercial high-yield varieties cannot survive.
Can I eat red rice daily?
Absolutely. Chilika Red Rice is nutrient-dense, making it a wholesome addition to your daily meals. Its low glycemic index also makes it a great choice for those managing blood sugar levels. And those of you looking for dietary fibre to complement your weight management program, this rice is for you too. It makes you feel fuller for a longer time.
How is it different from white or brown rice?
Red rice is richer in iron, fiber, calcium, and vitamins than both white and brown rice. Unlike white rice, it is minimally processed and therefore retains all of its bran layers, which serve as a storehouse of nutrients. Even the comparatively healthier brown rice lacks a fully intact bran layer. The intact, pigmented bran in red rice is the source of its many nutrients, including antioxidants such as flavonoids and anthocyanins. This makes red rice nutritionally superior to both white and brown rice.
Is your red rice the same as matta or Kerala red rice?
No. While they may look similar, Chilika Red Rice is a distinct indigenous variety, locally known as Bankia and grown only in the wetland ecosystems of Chilika, Odisha. It has a unique origin, flavor, and environmental significance.
Where is this red rice grown?
Our rice is grown in the wetlands surrounding Chilika Lake—Asia’s largest brackish water lagoon and India’s first Ramsar site—an ecological treasure of the country. Its survival is owed to traditional farming communities who continue to use age-old, eco-friendly methods.
What makes wetland-grown red rice unique?
Flood-tolerant and salt-resilient, Chilika Red Rice grows naturally with the monsoon, absorbing nutrients from the wetland’s mineral-rich floodwaters. Because of its origin in flood-prone ecosystems, the use of pesticides and fertilizers is not only unnecessary but also ineffective, as they would simply be washed away. This makes red rice grown in wetlands inherently organic. Moreover, its cultivation helps preserve the wetland’s ecology and supports endangered species like the Fishing Cat.
What variety of red rice is this? Is it indigenous?
Yes, it’s an indigenous, heirloom variety passed down through generations. It has not been genetically modified or commercially hybridized, making it a true indigenous landrace adapted to local conditions.
Is this rice organic or chemical-free?
Yes. Our farmers grow Chilika Red Rice without chemical fertilizers or pesticides. It is naturally organic by practice.
Is the rice polished or unpolished?
Neither. It is semi-polished, meaning most of the bran layer remains intact while some of the husk and superficial bran is lost. However, this does not hamper the retention of fiber, vitamins, and minerals. Further, the rice grains have been parboiled to increase shelf life and aid preservation.
Does it require soaking before cooking?
Soaking is highly recommended. Soak the rice overnight before cooking to reduce cooking time and improve texture.
How long does it take to cook compared to white rice?
Chilika Red Rice takes slightly longer to cook than white rice—about 25–30 minutes on a stovetop or in a pressure cooker. If you are using the latter, put 3 cups of water for one cup of rice and wait till 5 whistles. Soaking beforehand helps it cook faster and more evenly.
What is the texture and taste like?
It has a firm, slightly chewy texture with a nutty, earthy flavor. It pairs beautifully with both everyday curries and simple meals like dal or vegetables. If nothing else is available, simply have it with butter/ghee and salt.
Can I use it in everyday meals or only for special dishes?
It’s perfect for daily meals and also works well in special recipes like pulao, khichdi, or even risotto. Its high fiber keeps you full longer, making it ideal for a healthy everyday diet.
Can I steam this rice?
Yes! Chilika Red Rice can be steamed after soaking. Steaming preserves its texture and flavor, though it may take slightly longer than white rice. Ensure the grains are soaked well overnight to reduce cooking time.
Can I cook red rice in a pressure cooker or rice cooker?
Absolutely. You can cook it in both. In a pressure cooker, 4-5 whistles on medium heat (after overnight soaking) usually does the trick. In a rice cooker, use a 2.5:1 water-to-rice ratio and allow slightly more time than you would for white rice.
Is red rice healthier than white rice?
Yes. Red rice contains more fiber, antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals than white rice. It retains all of its bran layers, which makes it more nutritious and beneficial for digestion, energy, immunity, weight management and controlling inflammation.
Does it help with weight management or diabetes?
Yes. Chilika Red Rice has a low glycemic index, meaning it releases sugar slowly into the bloodstream—making it suitable for people managing diabetes. Its high fiber also helps with satiety or keeps you full for long, aiding weight management through diet.
Is red rice gluten-free?
Yes. Chilika Red Rice is naturally gluten-free, making it safe for those with celiac disease or gluten sensitivity.
Is it suitable for children or elderly diets?
Yes. It is a nutritious choice for all ages, supporting growth in children and digestive health in elders. Soaking and cooking the rice well ensures it’s easy to chew and digest.
Is there any cholesterol or fat in red rice?
No. Like all natural plant-based grains, Chilika Red Rice contains zero cholesterol and very little fat, making it a heart-healthy food choice.
How does buying this rice help endangered species like the Fishing Cat?
Your purchase supports traditional red rice cultivation that keeps wetlands intact. These wetlands are home to endangered species like the Fishing Cat, which rely on this habitat for survival. Specifically, the 6 feet tall red rice crop simulates the habitat for Fishing Cats and provides this rare species a seasonal habitat. By supporting red rice farmers, you help prevent conversion of wetlands into destructive and polluting land uses that make Fishing Cats homeless.
Can I mix it with other types of rice for texture or flavor?
Yes! You can mix red rice with white or brown rice to create unique flavors, textures, and colors in your dishes. Blending it is also a great way to introduce red rice into your meals gradually.
What is the shelf life of red rice?
When stored in an airtight container in a cool, dry place, Chilika Red Rice stays fresh for up to 12 months. Always check for moisture or pests if stored longer.
Is it available in different quantities (1kg, 5kg, etc.)?
Currently, Chilika Red Rice is available in 1kg packs, but we’re exploring larger quantity options soon. Stay tuned!
