King Cobra Rescued in Kalimpong, West Bengal

06 May 2026

This was a rescue that tested patience, persistence, and the power of community. 🐍

On 29 March 2026 in Ramdhora, Kalimpong district of West Bengal we responded to a call about a snake that had been repeatedly sighted near a roadside hollow for over 10–15 days.

After receiving the image and confirming the species to be a King Cobra we understood that the situation was risky on all fronts. The snake was exposed on the road and vulnerable to harm, while homes and home stays were just 10–15 feet away, with the nearest hospital nearly 20 km out.

Our rescue team travelled over 100 km through hilly terrain to reach the site by late evening. Work began immediately, but layers of large boulders made it impossible to safely access the snake in the dark. We paused and resumed early the next morning, this time with incredible support from local residents.

After digging nearly 6–7 feet and hours of careful effort, we finally located and safely rescued the cobra. It was an approximately 8-foot-long young male. 💛

With the Forest Department already informed, the snake was taken to the range office for a health check and later released into a suitable habitat along with the departmental officials.

This rescue wasn’t easy but it showed what’s possible when people come together with the right intent.
