Poaching attempt intercepted in Murshidabad; illegal mist nets recovered, two accused in judicial custody.
Early April marks the tail end of migration as passerine birds like pipits and larks (locally known as “bogari”) are still moving northwards from India towards Central Asia.
Bird poachers are well aware of this narrow window and strike when these birds are plump and most valuable in the meat trade – trapping and selling them for quick profit. We know this pattern too, which is why interception at this time is absolutely critical.
We had been receiving information from local villagers about three individuals repeatedly visiting the Savitrinagar fields of Satui Village, Murshidabad suspected to be setting up mist nets.
On the evening of 7 April 2026, a three-member HEAL team reached the site after informing the forest department. Soumyadip Mondal, Zonal coordinator Murshidabad, spotted the individuals and quickly understood they had plans to trap birds.
The men had hidden illegal locally-made mist nets in the tall grass. These nets were recovered, and the individuals were handed over to the Forest Department. We are grateful for their swift action and continued support. The accused were produced before the court and remanded to 14 days of judicial custody.
This was a moment where quick action made all the difference between life and death for the migratory birds.
This is not a one off incident. Every year, the HEAL team is spread out in different fields across central West Bengal trying to stop such bird poachers from catching birds. Your support helps keep boots on the ground.
