Awareness Drive for Effective Wildlife Hazard Management around Airport

04 December 2025

Effective wildlife hazard management begins long before animals reach an airport boundary. At HEAL, we are working with communities and government agencies to reduce conflict by addressing the root causes that draw wildlife into high-risk zones.

Door-to-door Awareness Drive for Wildlife Hazard management

On 24 November, 2025 our Cooch Behar team, led by Zonal Coordinator Ardhendu Banik, joined airport staff for a door-to-door awareness drive around the Cooch Behar Airport. The team visited nearby households, fish markets, and mutton markets to discuss safe waste-disposal practices that often help reduce the presence of scavenging wildlife such as birds, jackals, and snakes drawn by rodents.

Team HEAL went from shop to shop to make locals aware of the best way to dispose waste
Awareness pamphlets were distributed among locals for safe waste disposal practices

These animals can inadvertently stray into airport premises, increasing risks for both people and wildlife. Pamphlets with simple, practical waste-management guidelines were distributed to residents and vendors.

Ardhendu Banik, HEAL’s zonal coordinator tells a local resident of the dangers of putting food waste out in the open that an animal might get attracted to.

This community outreach is part of an ongoing effort following a ‘Wildlife Hazard Management’ seminar conducted jointly by the Forest Department, and HEAL for the staff of Airport Authority of India.

You can read more about the seminar here.

Together, we’re working to keep airport spaces safer — for people, and for wildlife.
